In general, use a gravel with a fine grain size, which may be zeolite, lapilli, or pumice stone; and coarser-grained gravel.

Most of the substrate is made up of Akadama, a soil consisting of clay and nutrients mixed together and baked, also available in fine or coarse particle size.

In addition to these components, peat and humus are added to the soil, the humus consisting mainly of sphagnum moss or leaf mould.
