Fertilizer

Everyone owning a garden, a vegetable garden or simply a plant, or a flower pot knows the word fertilizer, and you do not have to be a green thumb to actually know what it is or how it works. To be more specific and to actually find its right place in the whole scene, the fertilizer can be identified as the technical mean that we need to give or give back, in some cases, the right nutrients and living elements to our plants. This applies to both the case of a vegetable garden, or a small plant we put in the terrace. Just think of vitamin supplements and growth helper that allow our plants to keep their health or to restore after a disease: this is what fertilizer is for. Parasites and other diseases will find hard time to attack the greenies if we help them preventing this by the right usage of fertilizer. When we fertilize the soil we basically give it the food it needs to feel the plants, ... continua

The plants can, in this way, survive and grow up without the risk, or with a lower risk anyway, to be infected by diseases reaching the blooming stage improving their life cycle. Just remember that if we use too much fertilizer we will obtain the opposite of what can be a healthy plant: the quantity and quality of fertilizer to be used varies depending on the type of soil, plant, dimensions, purposes and similar variables. The fertilizer should correspond in quantity, to the dimension of the leaves and to growing rate of the plant (velocity). This should be directly proportional. Fertilizer can be simple or complex: it depends on how many nutritive elements they contain. Depending on how they are produced, they can be either organic (if you do the compost with the rest of foods or with animal excrements) fertilizers or mineral, based on the chemical elements they own. Every plant needs its own specific fertilizer. We can fertilize often with small amount of fertilizer as if we use too much product we may actually obtain the opposite result. Just observe your plant every once in a while, and see for yourself if it needs more fertilizer or if it could be enough.Remember to fertilize only during the growing stage of the plants, or if we notice that it would need a certain help to strengthen up a little bit. Do not think of the fertilizer as if it was a medicine though, since it should not be used to cure plants that show signs of disease or parasites already. Do not fertilize plants if you just bought them because they must be too young and their roots are not so strong, or maybe because to be sold, they have been put under a sort of “vegetable coma” during fall or winter seasons, and the fertilizer would just put them to death. If we need to fertilize winter season plants, remember to use the correct one and with the correct dosage.

PROCEDURESBefore fertilizing, water your soil and let the water flow for a while so that impurities get taken away by the flood. Do not water after fertilization because this would cause all the nutrients to be washed away, nullifying our fertilizer-in-action technique. If you use a powder fertilizer read the instructions to see if it has to be diluted. You can just spread it on the soil if you are using compost, food residuals or similar. Mixing it with the cultivating soil if you are bedding the plant, is a very good technique to keep it safe and healthy.
