Among the different kinds of cleft grafts there are some which are practiced more often. Common cleft graft the final result is looking as if the branch of the tree has been cut. Both the two parts of the grafts have to be able to be opened wide. In order to prevent external elements to penetrate the graft, you will have to add some cement and glue to cover the cut. English cleft is smaller and thinner. It allows a faster healing of the cut and it has less chances of getting the plant sick with parasites or intrusions. Lateral clefts, as the name says, are practiced adding the grafts and the grafted with glue making them match perfectly.
The perfect period to cleft graft varies depending on the plant and on the climate conditions, but as a general rule, during the winter season you get the scions ready, the branches with the buds, and when the graft plant is going through its period of rest, you can start grafting. Spring and summer usually are the seasons when the majority of the cleft grafts are put in shape. More than choosing the best timeframe, what matters is to always use clean tools and to follow the correct directions in order to preserve the health of the original plants.
