Saffron location and climate

Saffron loves temperate climates. Nevertheless, it is a well adaptable plant so it can bear low temperatures without affecting its health. High temperatures do not affect it either. The ideal soil where to settle the saffron plant is a rocky / sandy soil, but not on rocks; soil with the presence of limestone, clay and similar allows a good drainage of the water. Saffron cannot stand wet soil, which means that you have to keep it away from wet, soaked, compacted plots. Usually, you will find saffron plantation in sloping structures to allow the water drainage. Rocks are not ideal because bulbs collecting would be hard and difficult.

Saffron growing

Saffron blooms during the fall season. Winter allows the plant to rest, in order to get ready for spring when new bulbs are created until the end of spring when leaves and roots get dried out. The new bulbs will then rest for the whole summer waiting to bloom in October. It is not very easy to grow them as plant because saffron seeds are sterile, and it needs a lot of care to start creating a life cycle. Parasites and diseases are not real problems for saffron growers since its life cycle is very circumscribed to a couple of months, when you do not even have to worry about watering, avoiding the concern of soaking the soil too much, which would be a serious problem for a plant that needs dryness in order to develop.

    Saffron care

Saffron careSaffron can be cultivated in open fields or small vegetable gardens, depending on the user’s needs. What is important is to keep weed and wild plants away from your saffron plant, in order to preserve them from being suffocated. Fertilization of the soil should be done before bedding out the new bulbs and once the fall season is over. to give back to the plant all those nutrients it just used to bloom. Usually saffron does not need to be watered since it lives during the fall season, when precipitations are more frequent than ever. Collecting the fruits would be ideal while the fruits are still closed. Flowers are then left to dry in very dry and hot places, most preferably in the sun or under a heating source.
