In Sicily prickly pear plants can be found growing in the wild. It has watery texture and obviously this is why it is part of the succulents family of plants. It is an evergreen plant which can reach up to five meters in height. As all the cactus family plants, they are called fat plants because they have the characteristic of holding water, not having branches and developing flowers directly on the trunk. It is easily adaptable to extreme weather conditions even though its roots are not very deep in the ground, but long. The trunk has other smaller trunks pretending to be leaves, which can be big up to 25 cm in width and 3 cm in depth. The real leaves are very very small and they appear on the trunk, in a shape of a cone. This plant has sort of thorns which can be very hurtful, but at the same time they can attract attention with their beautiful flowers.

It needs a lot of sunlight but not the direct sun exposure because it could damage the plant. If temperatures go below zero, it could be possibly bad for the plant because it cannot stand rigid temperatures. When repotting, the soil should be mixed with raw sand in order to drain the excessive water, avoiding stagnation. While performing this operation, if the roots appear rotten or damaged, simply remove them. Once you did repot it, water the plant by submerging it into water.

    Care

    Prickly pears care Reproducing this plant is not as easy as planting the seeds because the new plants have very few possibilities to grow resembling the original plant. The best practice is the scion. Prickly pear trees has to be fertilized at least once a month and the fertilizer should be liquid and mixed with irrigation water. During fall and winter season there is no need for fertilization. Watering should be frequent during spring and summer while during the resting season it can be lowered down to once a month.


    Maintenance

    You will only have to trim the prickly pear tree in order to make it neat and to let it grow without any hindrance. Every once in a while you will remove the flowers from the trunk and you will get some tardive fruits. Of course, to collect fruits you will have to use precautions. These fruits are full with vitamin c and they have the power to heal wounds. The plant is not easily attackable by parasites but it can get weak if it not cultivated properly.
